About My Sage Sphere

 

The idea for My Sage Sphere began during a summer service-learning project at a senior living facility. What started as a chance to develop new skills and give back to the community quickly became a life-changing experience. I spent my days connecting with residents—joining their daily activities, hearing their rich life stories, and marveling at their wisdom, humor, and resilience. Whether I was guiding someone through a craft project or listening to a cherished memory from their youth, I came away inspired by the incredible people I met.

Yet, alongside their joys, I noticed struggles—especially with technology. One resident wanted to video call her grandson but didn’t know how to use her tablet. Another needed help ordering groceries online but felt overwhelmed by the process. Most heartbreaking was a resident who longed to reconnect with old friends but didn’t know how to use email or social media. These seemingly small challenges revealed a larger issue: in a world increasingly reliant on technology, many older adults are left behind, unable to access tools that could simplify their lives and strengthen their connections.

This realization stayed with me and inspired me to act. Around the same time, I learned about two family friends—high school seniors in Portland, Oregon—who had started a nonprofit to help older adults with technology through direct, in-person sessions. I attended a couple of their workshops and saw firsthand how impactful their work was. They answered questions, guided seniors step-by-step, and, most importantly, offered patience and encouragement. Watching their success reinforced my belief that with the right approach, technology could empower seniors rather than overwhelm them. Motivated by their example and my own experiences, I decided to take the next step.

I founded My Sage Sphere to build on this vision, empowering older adults through tools and resources that are approachable, practical, and tailored to their needs. From step-by-step guides to tutorials on staying safe online, My Sage Sphere equips seniors with the confidence to navigate the digital world. But it’s more than just about technology—it’s about building community. Through a dedicated forum, seniors can connect with others, ask questions, share experiences, and support one another. This sense of belonging fosters mutual encouragement and reminds everyone that they are part of a larger, caring network.

At its core, My Sage Sphere is a tribute to the incredible individuals I met during my service project. It’s also inspired by the work of others, like my family friends, who demonstrated how small actions can create meaningful change. My Sage Sphere is a platform that celebrates stories, addresses challenges, and empowers seniors to thrive in an ever-changing world. It’s not just about technology—it’s about connection, empowerment, and creating a community where no one feels left behind.
